Jira Product Discovery and Productboard both bill the seat that edits, and only one caps the seats that just read

Jira Product Discovery charges for a creator and Productboard charges for a maker, and both words mean the same thing: the person on your own team who builds the board, not the customer who votes on it. Everything below was read on each vendor's own pricing page on 14 September 2026.

What does each one charge?

Free for three creators, then ten dollars a creator a month on Jira Product Discovery. Free, then nineteen dollars a maker a month billed yearly, on Productboard.

The Jira Product Discovery pricing page read 2026-09-14, a Free plan for three creators, Standard at ten dollars a creator a month, Premium at twenty five and a quoted Enterprise tier
Jira Product Discovery's published prices. Read 14 September 2026.

Jira Product Discovery's page does not split Standard and Premium into a monthly and a yearly column the way Productboard's does. Ten and twenty five dollars a creator are the only two rates it prints.

Productboard's page is the opposite problem. On eight loads on 9 September 2026, six showed a floor of fifty nine dollars a maker and two showed a free plan first.

The reading used on this page is the fifty nine dollar one, and the free plan is real either way, it just is not always the first thing the page shows you.

How much does Jira Product Discovery cost compared to Productboard?

It depends on how many people build the board rather than how many people vote on it, and here is the arithmetic at three sizes.

People who edit Jira Product Discovery Productboard
3 Free, under the 3 creator line $57/mo, at $19 a maker on Plus
5 $50/mo, $600/yr on Standard $95/mo, at $19 a maker on Plus
10 $100/mo on Standard $190/mo, at $19 a maker on Plus

At every size in this table, Jira Product Discovery's per creator rate is roughly half of Productboard's per maker rate on Plus, and Jira Product Discovery is free below four people while Productboard is not free above one.

Productboard's Business plan sits above Plus at fifty nine dollars a maker, and its own page states the minimum makers on Business two different ways depending on which load you get, two in one place and five in another.

That is not a figure this page can round to one number, so it is left as what it is: unpublished in any single form.

Neither company's viewer or contributor seats cost anything on either page. The bill in both cases is the count of people who edit, not the count of people who look.

Which one should you choose?

They solve different jobs inside the same company, and the honest answer names both.

Jira Product Discovery is the better choice if your company already lives inside Jira. Ideas link straight to Jira epics with no integration to configure, and the roadmap embeds in Confluence, which is a real advantage for a team that already has that stack.

Productboard is the more complete product management tool, and it is not close. It carries an insights layer, prioritization, roadmaps, teamspaces and a documented connection to product usage data, built for a product organisation with more than one team deciding what to build.

Neither one is a board built for a customer with no account. That is the gap the rest of this page keeps returning to.

Why choose Jira Product Discovery over Productboard, or Productboard over Jira Product Discovery?

Because one of them is priced for a small team inside Atlassian, and the other is priced for a product department with its own strategy layer.

Choose Jira Product Discovery when your ideas already need to become Jira tickets, because the link from an idea to the epic that delivers it is native rather than bolted on, and three creators cost nothing.

Choose Productboard when several product managers across different teams need to agree on priority, because the insights, the roadmaps and the connections to tools like Amplitude and Mixpanel are where that argument gets settled, and a smaller tool will not settle it for you.

The price in the table above follows from that choice. It does not decide it.

Is there a cheaper alternative to both?

If the problem is paying per person who edits at all, yes.

Our nine dollar plan does not count creators, makers or contributors. It is one project, one board, and the price does not move whether one person edits it or ten.

The whole field, with the unit each vendor bills on, is one page, and the calculator works the arithmetic at a size you choose for the tools in this category that bill by customer instead of by seat.

What does each do with a vote from a big customer?

Neither page we read states a way to weight a vote by what the customer behind it pays.

Jira Product Discovery does carry custom fields, so a team that keeps a revenue figure on an idea can sort by it. That is a field somebody types in and a sort somebody runs, not a weight written onto the vote itself, and it is not stated as a feature on the pages we read.

Productboard publishes an API and single sign on for its portal, and its own export is the list of the people who requested a feature rather than the whole board with each vote and each comment attached.

The weighted voting switch, on, with the line saying every vote is multiplied by the voter's tier weight
The switch that multiplies each vote by the voter's tier.

Can I move from one to the other?

Both are thin on what actually comes out.

Jira Product Discovery's own pages do not state what a creator can export. Productboard's export, by its own comparison table, is the list of feature requesters, not the board's history of votes and comments. Before moving away from either, that one line is worth confirming in writing, because neither page prints more than it.

Where we fit, and where we do not

We are not a product management suite and we are not an idea tracker built into a larger platform. There is no insights layer, no strategy view, no teamspace and no link from a request to a delivery ticket in another product.

Both of the tools above have something we do not: a free tier for the people who only look. Jira Product Discovery's contributors are unlimited and free on every plan including the free one, and Productboard's free plan carries twenty five contributors at no cost.

We have no free plan at any price, and every seat on our team plan is included rather than counted, but there is no zero dollar tier to point at.

Both also tie a piece of feedback back into a larger workflow that lives elsewhere: Jira Product Discovery links an idea straight to the Jira epic that delivers it, and Productboard connects its insights to product usage data from tools like Amplitude.

We have neither link. What we do is put a multiplier on a tier and write that weight onto the vote when it is cast, on every plan including the nine dollar one.

What is Jira Product Discovery, and what is Productboard?

Jira Product Discovery is an idea management tool that lives inside Jira. You collect insights, score them against fields you define, and link the ones you keep to Jira epics so delivery shows up beside the idea that caused it. It runs only inside the Atlassian cloud and it is billed per creator.

Productboard is a product management platform where a feedback portal is one surface among several. Roadmaps, prioritization, insights, a document layer and integrations with tools like Amplitude and Mixpanel sit alongside it, and it is billed per maker.

Does either one have a free plan?

Both do, and they cap different things. Jira Product Discovery's free plan, read on 14 September 2026, gives three creators, unlimited contributors and two gigabytes of storage, free forever rather than a trial. Productboard's free plan, read the same day, gives five hundred feedback notes, twenty five contributors, one teamspace and one product portal.

The honest summary

Both bill the person who builds the board rather than the customer who votes on it, and Jira Product Discovery's rate for that person is roughly half of Productboard's. Jira Product Discovery for a team already inside Atlassian with a small number of editors.

Productboard for a product department that needs the insights and the roadmap layer around the board. Ours if the vote itself should carry what the voter pays, at nine dollars flat with no seat count at all.
